Q: mmamakibiti: I am organising a walk and fun run in my area for the 2nd October 2010, for international elderly day(1/10)and breasr cancer month respectively. do you know how I can get sponsors? it's the first fun walk in my village
A: Runner: This is going to a good cause - try your local stores and radio stations

Q: Wendy: Hi Everyone, does anyone know whether there will be a "comrades walk" this year? They used to have it and then it stopped but I have heard rumours that it might be on this year?

Q: Erien: Anyone ,I need 1 number for the Skukuza half marathon on the 7th of August. Please!!
A: Roane Swindon: http://www.eventsnow.co.za/eventResult.php?evID=7927 Hope this helps!

Q: john: I would like to do some marathons later this year and hopefully comrades next. Im based outside SA but need to join a club, are clubs happy to have members who might no participate in any club events but just need the membership to be able to participate in competitions. If so what club do you recommend that i can join over the internet or email. Thanks
A: Runner: Most clubs don't worry about members participating in events within the club - I am not sure where in Africa you are, check on this site at the top left hand corner, there are "club", check which club you prefer to join

Q: Shelagh Smith: Tom, please pass on my best wishes and congrats to both Kay and Carol Crossley on their double greens - we've all worked flippin' hard for them. They were about an hour ahead of me and I didn't see you at the finish. Dankie. Shelagh

Q: Jakes: Hi to all runners. I just want to ask a question by making a statement aswell. DO YOU LOVE THE IDEA OF VUVUZELAZ ON THE COMRADES ROUTE ? . Imean from Pmb to Durbs we were bombarded by that uncultured and unasked instrument - sometimes right in your face. Most of the times we train in quiet enviroments and right into nature and enjoying Godgiven elements like dew, wind, sun ,rain and the splendour of it all. Now all in the sudden spectators give themself the right to blow that all away. I do appreciate spectators for their encouragement and the hussle that is going on next to the road but NO VUVU'S PLEASE !!!!
A: Runner: Personally I hate the sound of the Vuvuzela but unfortunately the Comrades Association cannot ban the Vuvuzela - the supporters can do whatever they want because they do not pay an entry fee. Yes I agree with you that the noise level of the Vuvuzela is rather disturbing but I guess it is because of the World Cup and I am sure that next no one will have a Vuvuzela on route
A: Rajen: I agree with Jakes-it is so distracting when running. I personally hated it from westwille onwards as the vuvuzela's and whistles being blown were very distracting. Why can't spectators just go back to the old way of just cheering runners on
A: Runner: @Rajen - trust me, next year you would even hear a Vuvuzela, it just because of the World Cup hype that people got the Vuvuzela

Q: Patrick: Looking for 2 entries for the Knysna Marathon . Please contact me if you are unable to participate . patrick@webadvert.co.za

Q: Freddie: To all the comrades runners , have a wonderful race , safe traveling mercies to all those that are traveling, May God Bless you all.
A: the RunneR 540: Hi. Freddie thanks the good wishes, we went and we back safely just few pains here and there but will soon be on the road again doining what we do best Running.

Q: Peter Maclean: Hi, where can I get an entry form for AMINOSTIM 15 km race on 10-6-2010 ? I would like to walk. Thanks, Peter
A: Runner: Gauteng North - Aminostim 15 km - Agricultural Research Council - Call Centre - 012 6540005(work) but from what I am aware of, all the races in Pta is cancelled during the World Cup

Q: Kendall: Hi I will be interning at the UCT Med School mid May through Mid August, coming from Portland, Oregon. What are some good running routes in the Observatory area? Also, are there any 5k-15K races/fun runs held in Cape Town during this period? Thanks Much! Kendall Williams
A: Runner: I am not from Cape Town but you can go to RACES on this forum. Running anywhere in Cape Town is lovely, just get out of the front door and run my friend - you will enjoy it

Q: MKT: Am i the only one who is still braving the chilly Highveld early mornings for my daily 8 kayers in preparation for Comrades ? How hectic, or less hectic, is your tapering
A: Johann: I'm braving the mornings 6 days a week but I'm not running Comrades. My training will go on as always through the winter.
A: Runner: No, you're not the only one. I run with a group at 4.30 every morning and I know of at least two other groups in my area. Some of the people are running Comrades but not everyone
A: Rajen: At least you guys can run-I pulled my hamstring a few days ago and its killing me that I may not be able to run Comrades-I'm praying my physio is going to pull a miracle.
A: Runner: Winter mornings is great to run - no humidity at all but its cold and dark in certain areas but the show must go on - Enjoy the training guys, just about 2 weeks more to go for the big day!!!!!!!

Q: Richard: Can anybody recommend good supplements to take. I am currently training for comrades and feel that I need something to give me an extra boost. Feeling a little sluggish. I have been told I should be taking a Multivitamin, Vitamin B complex, Slowmag. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
A: Runner: Hi there. A good multivit will be Centrum or Pharmaton. B complex is also needed as this improves stamina. I would rather suggest Ultimag instead of Slowmag, when you take Mg, you also need to take Zinc as this helps with the absorption of Mg, Ultimag has both in the correct amounts. It is also good to take some oils, Omega 3 is always a good choice, but the one that consists of Fresh water Salmon is always better. Hope this helps!
A: suren: I suggest you use Perpetuem by hammer. They are great for ultra races such as the comrades and they supplement the runner for all the deficiences in terms of long distance running. Available at Dischem stores.
A: Runner: I suggest you see your GP or get proper advice from a long distance runner as Comrades is a long day thus taking the wrong supplements could hurt you on the day

Q: MKT: Just a point of concern to some of us non-Comrades runners, and Gautengers in particular, there is a strong voice coming out of the Metro Police that they will not sanction and allow any road running race during the soccer World Cup as their resources will be fully stretched by the event. It's highly likely that most races will be cancelled which fall in that period.
A: Shelagh: I've also heard that rumour too!!
A: Johann: I'll be running the Gauteng Winter Trail series in June. At least these should be ok, but you never know.
A: Runner: It would not bother me too much as I am currently recovery from an injury - during the WC, I will be training only - I plan to run my first race at the end of July if all goes well

Q: Rob Ford: I am trying to get old results of races between 1985 till early 1990's, in particular the 'World record Marathon Challenge' organised by Helderberg Harriers in Cape Town (Sonja Laxton's bid to break the world record) any assistance appreciated.

Q: Lindt: Hi. I am looking for a good running club in PTA East, does anyone have any suggestions?
A: Me: PTA East is a BIG area. Maybe Wingate club? or Magnolia runners? Tuks Marathon club.

Q: alison wales: We will be visiting south africa for a holiday arriving in J'Burg on 5th Nov and travelling to Camps Bay staying there till 20 Nov. Does anyone know of any 10km races around these dates? Also can anyone give me advice on athletics tracks in camps bay that we could access for training? I can be emailed on alison.wales1@btinternet.com
A: Runner: Since you are currently on here, check out the race section - I don't stay in Cape Town, you don't have to run a race there, just training in CT will take your breath away by the scenery

Q: linda: On the subject of good/bad race organization I just want to compliment Long Tom Marathon. My first one and although an incredibly tough race the organization was superb. Right from the start iced water and every type of snack you may want at all tables. Good music and very encouraging helpers. Brilliant long sleeved t shirts. Absolutely beautiful scenery and I think excellent mental prep for Comrades.
A: Runner: Yeh, very few races get a compliment like that, some races are very well organized from start to finish and the take home stuff make a runner/walker come back the next year

Q: azaad: I have been training "consistently" and running the alternate marathons/long runs up to 30km on weekends but my knees after the marathons are severely sore that I am considering to enter half marathons only.Do I need medical help or someone with similar experience can share their solutions, if any?
A: Runner: Are you running in the right shoes? If you are not sure get checked by a podiatrist. If you live in Jhb try Vernon Lever in Bedfordview.
A: azaad: Thanks,I have seen a podiatrist, though not recent, and have the designed insoles etc. I think I may have to visit him again.

Q: Ets: Again, well done to the organizers of the Kosmos 3 in 1, in Secunda. It was well organized and a great route. Thank you guys!
A: RunneR with a Smile: woul like to also thank the race organisers for the wonderfull job well done... thanks for the results. wish you all best for the comming races may your races grow and grow. Thanks to the paramedics and all who Helped @the swimming pool...

Q: MINI KHUMALO: I was very disapointed with the Elands Valley race organisers.Firstly,we never heard the start;s gun, the first two tables had no water, people at the tables had no clue , one'clever' said I shall find water 500m down the road. Was not sure if he meant I should go to the river.Table distances were incorrect, I think at some stage we ran almost 5kms with no table insight. Then approx. 500m there was another table. With about 13kms to go I could hardly run because of dehydration. It was my first marathon after about 2yrs of injury and had gone there to qualify. By stroke of luck I made it with 2mins to spare !! The route is excellent and manageable. I could have easily gone in between 4h30 and 4h45. Will I return? Never again. I know in the years gone by when such flop occured the organising club used to be disciplined, so what happens nowadays? The R80 pre-entry plus travel ,tollgate fees, gas, accomodation = the discomfort is not worth it !!!

Q: Gavin: Elands Valley Marathon was not very well organised. There was a water table missing on the first half of the marathon, some tables ran out of water and why Pepsi instead of Coca Cola? What dreadful stuff! Monday morning the road was still littered with water satchets. Despite everything I had a good run but I won't be back
A: Runner: The race was a disaster, we diod not know when the race had started ,for the first 3 water tables there was no water. The tables where there was water you needed to get it yourself, no marshals to help. From 32km to the finish there no water only PEPSI and I got dehydrated aftr 36km and could no longer run . When I got to the finish there was no water in the tables. The race was poorly organised , I'm not sure what the organisers did with the R80 we payed for pre-entries. The route is beautiful the race management is crappy so not doing it again.
A: Maria: I was also disappointed with the Elands Valley marathon organisation - the pre-start was a nightmare - the officials assisting with handing out of the pre-entries were very inefficient - resulting in a very long queue - the envelopes were all over the show - and people were resorting to grabbing whatever envelope they could lay their hands on as it was 5 mins before the start and many people still had not been provided with their race numbers. On the drive back to WB after the end of the race, not one water table in sight, but litter and water sachets everywhere!!
A: Johann: I agree, there was no organisation at all. I always liked this race. Don't know what went wrong this year. I won't travel and have all the expenses again for this race. Elands Valley lost a lot of supporters this year.
A: runner: I spoke to someone on the organising committee at the end of the race about the poor organisation. He said they battled to get helpers. No one wanted to give up their time for free. They wanted to be paid!
A: Andre: Hi. I had a very good run. Agree that the orginazations was not good, but it is such a nice area to go for a run. It was my first marathon where I ran without any form of discomfort. Maybe the PEPSI did me good? This race can easily be one of the top 5 races in South Africa...
A: Another runner: Top 5 - are you joking? What a shambles. I ditto everything everyone else has complained about. There are plenty races in scenic areas that are better organized. I will definitely not be back.
A: Suren: Suren: just wondering: Andre, perhaps you are one of the organisers of the race trying to get some positivity? respond!
A: Cavin: Maybe not that well organised but better than a lot of others. If you were well prepared and not in the mind of thinking that Elands valley is an easy qualifier for intrained runners you would have not struggled with the water , Pepsi or Coke not being enough. wonderful area, beautiful scenery - I'll be back.
A: Andre: Hi. No, I am not one of the organizers! Most of my running the last 2 years were in the cities of JHB and PTA. It was very nice getting out and run there at Waterval Boven. Beautifull area. I ran my PB (beat my previous best by 15 minutes!). I heard people complained about the lack of water at some tables -- these were probably the back runners, I thought there were enough tables and enough water. (I agree no water can really ruin your race.) I pre-entered and when I picked up my number there were no queues -- I probably arrived at a good time! I did not see the mess due to bad cleenup afterwards, as I went home after I completed the race and others were still running. SO, all in all I had a very good run! I finished strong and now are very positive about Comrades!
A: mike: Suren wake up ! Andre agreed that the race was not well organised, and stated that it "CAN BE" and not "IS" one of the top 5 races in the country, obviously implying that the organisers need to get their act together.
A: wow: wow mike: are YOU one of the organizers? that's an uncalled for attack on Suren! sounds like the 'average' runners had an awful time of it:( and for marathon runners who are accustomed to Coke, a sudden switch to Pepsi can be dramatic...this is not a simple 5km, but a FORTY TWO KM run!
A: Andre: Hi Me Again. Why don't the runners of ElandsValley go to www.runnersworld.co.za and go and Rate The Race? Another thing, before you just complain, have you ever volunteered to help with a race? Be a marshal, help at a watertable, at the start with logistics, etc.? It is hard work (unpaid work) and some runners can be very rude! Next time you get good service somewhere on a race, please smile and say "thank you!".
A: Runner: Lots of different stories about the race - sure the organization was not up to standard, someone has to be blamed and BTW I am not from that club. Pose your dissapointments to the club directly, maybe next year it will be a turn around for you to enjoy. Bantering here does not help, get to the organizers, they need to hear all about this. Any club will welcome complaints or good comments in order for them to improve their next race
