Comrades Big Five Hills Series for Rhino Conservation

Comrades Big Five Hills Series for Rhino ConservationThe Comrades Big Five Hills Series, is a project that has been undertaken to raise money for rhino conservation. It has been allied with the Comrades marathon, the iconic South African ultra-distance race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Colin Milliken, an artist from the Eastern Province, was commissioned to paint the Big Five Hills of Comrades using a series of photographs from aerial photographer Pete van der Spek. This watercolour depicts, one of the five hills, Inchanga and is signed by Bruce Fordyce. Each of the Big Five Comrades Hills will be signed by one of the five legendary Comrades runners. All proceeds from the sale of five hundred sets, will go the Magqubu Ntombela Memorial Foundation and the Wildlands Conservation Trust, in aid of Rhino conservation.

Colin Milliken, an artist from the Eastern Province, was commissioned to paint each of the Big Five Hills of Comrades using a series of photographs from aerial photographer Pete van der Spek. The watercolours depict Polly Shortts, Inchanga, Botha’s, Field’s and Cowie’s Hill, all well known to anyone who has run the arduous route.

Each print has been individually signed by one of five legendary Comrades runners. They are Dave Rogers, Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe, Jackie Mekler and Alan Robb. They have been packaged in a portfolio that gives some background information on both the hills and the runners.

All proceeds from the sale of five hundred Comrades Big Five Hills Series sets, will go the Magqubu Ntombela Memorial Foundation and the Wildlands Conservation Trust. The former was started by internationally renowned conservationist Dr. Ian Player in memory of his mentor and fellow ranger in Zululand, after whom the trust has been named. As part of a team of dedicated South Africans, they pioneered the original campaign to save the rhino in our country. Dr. Players endorsement is doubly meaningful as he is also the founder and former winner of the Duzi canoe marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The Wildlands Conservation Trust, headed by Dr. Andrew Venter is also devoted to rhino conservation and the protection of the environment. It is a Comrades endorsed charity and brings considerable expertise to the fund-raising endeavour. Many people have generously contributed to this project, enabling expenses to be minimised and all profits to go directly towards the second fight to save the rhino.

The Comrades Marathon was started by Vic Clapham to commenerate his South African comrades who died in the First World War. The Comrades Association by endorsing this fund-raising campaign are now, by example adding their support to what will be another formiddable South African battle.
