Route Description:
Route Type: Circular
This race is moderate to hard, but scenic. The early stages of the marathon are run over undulating terrain. Then come two kilometres of hill climbing, followed by a downhill stretch. To reach the halfway mark you will find two more challenging climbs separated by an easy three-kilometre downhill stretch. The second half is characterised by some fast downhill spurts followed by short climbs. The final part of the race has a long, gentle uphill, which levels out as you wind your way to the end.

The half marathon follows the first 13 kilometres of the marathon route and then splits onto a short uphill, followed by a four-kilometre fast downhill stretch. Finally, you wind your way towards the scenic finish in the Klipriversberg Nature Reserve. This classic race is run through the pleasant, picturesque areas of the new southern suburbs of Johannesburg. This is an essential Comrades training run.

Editor's Notes:
Walkers may enter the half marathon, but have a 04:00 time limit. The Jackie Gibson Memorial Marathon was inaugurated in 1946. Jackie Gibson represented South Africa in the 1936 Berlin Games and finished seventh. In the following year he set an Empire record when he won the South African Championships in Krugersdorp. The race is being run for the 62nd time in 2009.
Finishers: 1384 Time Limit: 05:30
