| Route Description: |
Route Type: Out and back This historic race has a well-balanced course with a few hills, all in the right places. You run out of the town and onto the Memel Road to Ingogo and back. The first section is run on tar roads and incorporates a climb of about seven kilometres. There is some respite, as the following 10 kilometres are flat and the running is easy and relaxed. Here you can really enjoy the mountains, fresh air and the race’s natural surroundings.
At the 17-kilometre marker the route turns onto a sand road for about eight kilometres. Along this stretch lie the silent gravesites of the fallen heroes of the battle of Schuinshoogte. This is a good spot to pause and reflect. Before the turning point at Ingogo, there is a monster of a hill which goes on for a punishing two kilometres. This is followed by a steep downhill stretch to the Ingogo River where you steel yourself for the return journey to Newcastle. All other races are on the same route with different turning points.

| Editor's Notes: |
This race has been staged on 30 previous occasions. This is a good race to do as an early Comrades qualifier or even as a training run. It can be rather cool at the start, so be prepared. This is a historic run, which takes in some of the sites of battles preceding the famous Battle of Majuba, a major deciding battle of the Anglo-Boer War. Fought on 27 February 1881, Majuba became a legend in South African military history. Schuinshoogte was the site of a one-day battle on 8 February 1881, when the British, under General Colley, found themselves surrounded by the Boers at the top of the hill. Finishers: 400 Time Limit: 07:00 |
