Route Description:
Route Type: Point to point
The first 10 kilometres are relatively easy. The road undulates through the beautiful Midlands countryside at arguably the most beautiful time of the year. There is a four-kilometre detour out of and back into Fort Nottingham near the 12-kilometre mark to make up the marathon distance. This gives participants a unique opportunity to see something of the front runners or of friends and rivals behind.

The course becomes more demanding from 18-kilometres where there are steeper down gradients, but the views of the mountain and deep Umgeni River Valley are stunning. The route starts at 1480 metres above sea level and finishes at 1100 metres, with a 250 metre drop over the last 14 kilometres. In case you enjoy the "free wheel" too much, two big hills offer an unwelcome "wake-up" call when you can almost smell the boerewors rolls at the finish!

Editor's Notes:
The Midlands Meander Marathon has been ranked by the Runner’s World race judges as a well organised and well presented event. Since the initiation of their ranking system, it has been voted as one of South Africa’s top ten marathons.

The race was run for the first time in 1998 and is now a favourite amongst runners. You will find it scenically beautiful as it passes many interesting historical and geographical sites. For a variety of accommodation options, contact Selected Mini Stays on 033-3303343 or 082-8237409. This information was taken from the 2009 Guide, please check details with the organiser.
