The marathon is two laps of the half marathon route. It is a fast and furious race that is arguably the easiest route you can hope for in any marathon. Beware however of the sting in the tail now named ‘Hakkin Hill’. All three events start at the main entrance to the school in Mopanie Road.
From the gun there is an easy downhill canter turning left into Blackwood and over the Hennops where there is a gentle climb up to Jean Avenue. Turn into Clubview and the route goes past the Alpha Centurion Clubhouse, left into Aberdeen and right into Ashwood where the sun will make its presence known on lap two.
Turning right into Wierda Road the slow and poisonous climb over the highway makes its unwelcome presence felt, especially on the second lap. If you find this climb tough, do not enter for Comrades.
Once over the bridge there is welcome relief along Hans Strydom; there are numerous speed bumps along this stretch so watch your footing. Onward to Botha Avenue which runs through shady Doringkloof, on to Von Willich and past the Centurion Mall. The end is drawing near once you are under the highway where the route makes its final left-turn into Witstinkhout. When you reach Blackwood either climb to the finish or repeat the whole exercise for the marathon. Remember to save a little energy for ‘Hakkin Hill’ at the end or disappointment may await you.
The 10 kilometre race is a flat and easy route through Bronberrick, Hennopspark and Clubview. Beware: the infamous ‘Hakkin Hill’ has been written into the script of this race as well.
