THE RUN
From the start in Sabie, the climbing begins. The morning is cool, the mist is a carpet and the St Joseph's lilies are in full bloom. This is a journey, not only of the body, but also back into the hazy distant past. The pull out of Sabie must be taken at a relaxed and easy pace for the initial climbing is relentless and unforgiving. Look back over your shoulder, and if the mist has not yet dissipated Sabie lies below enveloped in a shroud of mystery. The half marathon climb is over almost before it began, shake hands with the brave souls going on and canter downhill to the finish.
For those long distance-runners, your landmark to aim for is the Long Tom cannon placed about 20 kilometres into the race. Here we are reminded of the turbulence of times long since forgotten. The pass was named after the famous cannon the Boers used to try to dislodge the British from Lydenburg/Mashishing in a battle during September 1900. The British were outgunned and outmanoeuvred by a cunning General Botha and his famous four-wheeled long range artillery. On 11 September 1900, after the battle was over Botha passed successfully through the pass with his men and the Long Toms.
Here you turn and retrace your steps into Sabie and the York Timbers Sports grounds. For the ultra-marathon the final 13 kilometres are an easy loop toward Lonecreek Waterfall.

EDITORS NOTES
EDITORS NOTES
The format of this race has changed. No longer a point-to-point race over the pass the course features an out and back event finishing in Sabie. The Long Tom has experienced mixed fortunes over the years, but with a new look it does have a future. Tables are well appointed and the festivities at the end rival any big race on the calendar. The race will be run for the 27th time in 2017. Walkers are welcome to participate in the half marathon.
Time Limit: 07:00
