EDITORS NOTES
The Value Logistics Ou Voetpad Mountain 10 Miler has been consistently ranked in a number of our surveys as a well organised and well presented event. Long before motorised transport the only way to cross the Witwatersberg to reach Pretoria was to lead a horse over the Daspoortrand footpath. This historic race follows part of that footpath. During the Anglo Boer War, the British built a blockhouse on the footpath to protect it and to control access to Pretoria.
The organisers go out of their way to entertain runners around this challenging route. Irish soldiers are in attendance with pipes and drums. The 1900-era British and Boer soldiers, complete with rifles, do guard duty in the mountains. To add to the atmosphere, the race is started thunderously with a genuine six-pounder field cannon. The Ou Voetpad is proudly associated with the university’s alcohol and drug awareness campaign: ‘Addicted to Life’. The fun run, a five kilometre event, is held in support of the campaign and is co-hosted by the TUT Department of Student Development. Walkers and climbers are welcome. A six mile race will also be run on tar.
