ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km - Langat and Chepkorir celebrate consecutive RYC wins

Langat and Chepkorir celebrate consecutive RYC wins at Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Kenya’s Vincent Langat and Diana Chepkorir made it two wins in as many Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series starts when they crossed the finish line first in the men’s and women’s races respectively at the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 12 May 2024.
Just five weeks after winning the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K, Langat produced his first sub-28-minute clocking on South African soil when he crossed the finish line in 27:52 in The Mother City.
“I’m happy. I was excited when I made my move with 1km to go. This was my best win. Elroy is a strong guy. I like him and I appreciate the competition. I will now go and prepare for the Olympics in the 10 000m,” says Langat.
Finishing just three seconds behind winner Langat was South Africa’s Elroy Gelant. The two-time Olympian stopped the clock in 27:55, while Francis Abongo, ran a personal best 28:16 to claim third place in his first official 10km road race outside his native Kenya.
With three personal bests over 10km, 21km and 42km over the last nine months, 37-year-old Gelant says he feels more confident than ever which is why he had wanted to attack Precious Mashele’s 27:35 national record even though the wind had other ideas.
“The wind was a factor. I just told myself like a skipper who’s on a boat when there’s wind you just need to change your sails, so I just changed by angle of running. But I knew that I would run well. I set my watch to SA Record. I didn’t get there but I’m still happy with the race,” explained the athlete who is coached by Jean Verster and walks away with R85 000 in prize money - R25 000 for second place and R60 000 for breaking 28 minutes.
Like her countryman Langat, Diana Chepkorir’s 31:47 win in Cape Town made it two Absa RUN YOUT CITY Series wins in as many starts after her victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K early in April. Lesotho’s Neheng Khathala was the runner-up in 32:16, while Getenesh Sase Agafew of Ethiopia claimed third in 32:48.
"Congratulations to Vincent Langat, Diana Chepkorir and Elroy Gelant for their outstanding performances today in the 'Mother City'. Their achievements have truly raised the bar for racing in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “We extend our gratitude to all participants, from elites to social runners, whose energy and enthusiasm made this year's event a resounding success. We also want to thank our sponsors for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in making this event possible. The fact that we reached our capacity of 12,000 entrants is a clear testament to the growing popularity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. As we wrap up in Cape Town, our excitement now turns to the next event in the Series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in July. Durban runners, be sure to secure your entries early to avoid missing out on what promises to be another fantastic event."
"We applaud the incredible efforts of all the participants in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K and their enthusiastic support of Team Absa Walk Run on Strava. Chepkorir targets record pace, Mashele to challenge Kenyans at Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
With a world class lineup of elite athletes including Kenya’s Diana Chepkorir, who is one of only seventeen women to have broken 30 minutes in a 10km race, it’s all systems go for the much-anticipated Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 12 May 2024.
Chepkorir headlines the women’s race after winning last month’s Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBRHA 10K in 31:15. Boasting a personal best of 29:56, the Kenyan says she loves racing in South Africa.
“I decided to come back to race here in South Africa because it is a nice place to visit. The country is so welcoming, and the races are well organised. I hope for good weather on Sunday to perform at my best,” said the diminutive East African who produced a personal best 15:01 for 5km when she claimed fourth position at the Adizero Road to Record in Germany a fortnight ago.
Chepkorir’s compatriot Vincent Langat is the favourite to win the men’s race. After victory in “The Friendly City” on 7 April and a lifetime best 27:11 at the same event in Germany, Langat will be gunning for a second consecutive Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series victory. But the fastest South African in the field Precious Mashele who challenged him in Nelson Mandela Bay has other ideas.
“You remember that last year in Gqeberha I ran the national record (27:35) and that was because of the East Africans. They push us. They don’t run slow. They run hard from start to finish. So if you want to run fast just chase them. I like running with them because they make us run personal bests. My body is responding well. on Sunday my goal is to finish on the podium. Anything is possible though, I think. I can be the first man to cross the line,” said the national 10km record holder, Precious Mashele.
Mashele leads the South African charge that includes the in-form Elroy Gelant, Stephen Mokoka and Kabelo Mulaudzi, all of whom have finished on the podium in previous editions of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. In the women’s race Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala who was third last year is back again, while Cacisile Sosibo will carry South African hopes in “The Mother City” on Mother’s Day.
Stillwater Sports Managing Director and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, Michael Meyer says, “We're proud to announce an impressive lineup of athletes set to compete in this year's Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. The field includes a blend of top local and international talent both in the Elite Men’s and Elite Women’s categories, promising a highly competitive and exciting race through the stunning streets of ‘The Mother City.' We extend our best wishes to all athletes and look forward to a truly memorable race day!"
Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Absa's Head of Sponsorships, says, “We are excited to see you at the starting line of the annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Whether you're a seasoned runner, a casual jogger, or a spirited spectator, your presence and stories are crucial to the vibrant tapestry of our community. Join us in running or walking to uplift communities across South Africa through our R1 campaign, designed to make a tangible difference. For every kilometre logged by a Team Absa member on Strava, we pledge to donate R1, reinforcing our commitment to positive change where it's needed most. Be sure to sign up and follow Team Absa Walk/Run on Strava to start tracking your kilometres and be part of this impactful journey.”

Khatala excited to return for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Just two weeks after achieving the second-fastest marathon time of her career, Neheng Khatala is gearing up for her first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race in 2024, the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, that will take place this Sunday, 12 May in the Mother City.
Lesotho’s national record holder in the marathon, Khatala achieved a remarkable 2:28:37 at the Hamburg Marathon in late April, securing tenth place. She has since been recovering well and is excited to line up at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
“The second half of the race (refering to the Hamburg Marathon) was tough with a few small hills all the way to the finish. So that’s where I struggled. But I was well looked after and made it to the finish. For recovery, I’ve just been jogging and seeing the physio - the usual stuff, nothing much,” explained Khatala.
Despite struggling in the second half of the race in Germany, the Olympian still managed to cross the finish line just 31 seconds outside her national record. This grit coupled with her experience in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, makes Khatala a dangerous competitor. In 2022 she ran a personal best 32:06 in ‘The Mother City’, while last year she finished in third place.
This time around though, the Potchefstroom-based University of the North-West student doesn’t have a target time in mind saying only that she will see how she feels on the day.
“For Cape Town, I’ll just see how the body feels on the day and then I’ll take it from there. I don’t have a pre-determined objective to run a certain time. I will just run according to how the body responds,” confirms Khatala.
The Hollywood Athletics Club athlete is part of a strong women’s field which includes Diana Chepkorir. The 22-year-old Kenyan won the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on 7 April and is one of only seventeen women worldwide to have broken 30 minutes for 10km.
"We're thrilled to have Neheng Khatala return to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in 2024," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "With Neheng and Diana Chepkorir both confirming their entries, we're seeing an exceptional level of talent that’s elevating the standard of women's racing in the series. Their participation not only adds to the competitive edge but also underscores the international appeal of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. We’re expecting an exciting race in the women's field and look forward to witnessing their outstanding performances."

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km - Langat ready for round two,
Tuesday 30 April 2024
Langat ready for round two, as Mulaudzi gears up for Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Fresh from his triumph in 'The Friendly City' at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month, Kenya’s Vincent Langat is set to make a return to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series on Sunday, 12 May 2024. This time, he has his sights set on the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
“I have been well. I just went on with training without any problems,” said Langat who produced his fastest 10km clocking in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in what was his first official race outside Kenya.
But Langat has since improved on the mark he set on 7 April in Gqeberha. This past weekend, the man who claimed a top ten finish in the 10km at the 2024 Kenyan Cross Country trials, took fifth place at the Adizero Road to Records in Germany in a lightening quick 27:11.
Armed with this new lifetime best, Langat is high on confidence and optimistic about breaking the 28-minute barrier once again when he lines up in ‘The Mother City’ on Mother’s Day.
“It was very nice to cross the finish line as the first finisher (refering to his performance at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K). I hoped for a faster time, but the circumstances didn’t allow it. I want to win another race in South Africa! And try to better my PB,” confirms Langat.
When he won in the Eastern Cape, Langat saw off a strong challenge from Precious Mashele who eventually faded into third place as he was passed by a fast-finishing Elroy Gelant. In Cape Town, the East African will face a new opponent in Kabelo Mulaudzi. Although injury forced Mulaudzi out of the first race of the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, he has recovered and is looking forward to the challenge.
“I’ve recovered from the injury and have been training well,” said Mulaudzi. “I’m just focusing on my race because I know it’s not going to be an easy one. I’m racing against the best in the country, the likes of Precious Mashele, Stephen Mokoka and Elroy Gelant. But for now, I’m focusing on my race. If I can get a top five or top three podium position, I would be happy. I’m looking forward to giving my best.”
"We're thrilled to welcome Vincent Langat back to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in May," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "His return adds an extra level of excitement, highlighting the competitive spirit of the Series. It's fantastic to see South Africa's elite athletes like Kabelo Mulaudzi and Precious Mashele going head-to-head with international athletes of Langat's caliber. We can’t wait to witness this thrilling competition at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, May 12."

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km
Wednesday 24 April 2024
Mashele targets third consecutive RUN YOUR CITY podium at Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
As the most consistent performer in the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, Precious Mashele is eagerly anticipating his second event of the 2024 series: the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 12 May 2024.
Fresh from his bronze medal win in the 5000m event at the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships on Saturday (20 April), Mashele has confirmed his readiness to tackle the iconic 10km race in the Mother City.
“I’m happy with my bronze medal at the Championships because the race was very tough. I’m very happy with what I got,” he said of his 13:35.19 finish behind winner Adriaan Wildschutt and silver medalist Elroy Gelant at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
“My fitness is coming around. Although I’m not where I want to be yet, I can say I’m at about 70% of where I should be. But I’ve got momentum and I think it’s only a matter of time before I get the shape I want.”
Despite not being as fit as he’d like to be yet, the PUMA ambassador still managed to claim a top eight finish (13:46.19) in a hot and humid 5000m final at the African Games in Ghana in March and then followed that up with a dogged third place (28:19) during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month.
Running in the colours of Boxer Athletics Club, Mashele represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics and is confident that he can translate that track fitness into good results in a road running series where he has claimed four podium finishes in his last five starts. Mashele believes he tends to perform well during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series because the organisers invite world class athletes who make it easier for him to run faster. It is for this reason that he is excited to be part of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 12 May.
“When I run with the East Africans I run fast times and I run away from the South Africans. So for me, it’s a good opportunity to run with the East Africans,” adds Mashele.
"We're thrilled to have Precious Mashele line up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 12 May,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “His performance at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month and at the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships this past weekend showcased his incredible talent, and we're excited to see him bring that energy to the streets of the Mother City. Mashele's presence adds to the elite field and further elevates the competitive spirit of the event. We wish him the best of luck as he takes on this iconic race."

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km - Mokoka enters as part of his 2024 Olympic Games Journey
Tuesday 16 April 2024
Mokoka enters Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K as part of his 2024 Olympic Games Journey
South African long-distance runner Stephen Mokoka joins an impressive roster of athletes for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that is set to captivate the Mother City on National Mother’s Day, Sunday, 12 May 2024.
Despite failing to finish his debut Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon this past Saturday (13 April), Stephen Mokoka remains upbeat about his preparation for the Olympic Games. The former 50km World Record holder made it clear throughout his buildup to the race around the Cape Peninsula that the main objective of his 56km debut was to prepare himself for the hilly conditions he will encounter during the Olympic Marathon in Paris in August.
“I’m grateful that I got a chance to race against the guys that I usually see on TV while getting used to the distance. It was a great experience for me,” said the three-time Olympian who is the holder of a 27:38 10km lifetime best.
And with that ultra marathon behind him and no ill-effects having been suffered, the 39-year-old who ran his first sub-28-minute 10km on home soil when he finished as the runner-up at the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, has confirmed that he will take part in the second Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race of 2024, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
Mokoka says the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on May 12 is the next step on his journey to a fourth Olympic appearance.
“I’ve signed up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. I’ll be there. I’m okay and have no pain. I stopped earlier than the long runs that I’ve been doing (refering to the Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon). It’s just the pace that was a little bit different. When I resume on the track, we’ll see from there,” states Mokoka. “I’m excited to be back at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May. The series has been good for us and it’s always a pleasure to line up on race day.”
"We're thrilled to welcome Stephen Mokoka to the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Stephen's exceptional athleticism and his continued support of the series have been truly phenomenal. His participation not only adds to the excitement of the event but also highlights the high caliber of athletes attracted to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. We’re excited to welcome him to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K and are honored to be part of his journey to the 2024 Olympic Games."

Capetonians support CANSA when you #RunYourCity this Mother’s Day
When registering online for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K (taking place on Sunday 12 May 2024), participants, whether they're running or walking, can support the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) by making an immediate donation towards this meaningful cause.
A non-profit leader in the fight against cancer since 1931, CANSA enables research, educates the public and advocates for and supports all people affected by cancer, while leading SA towards a cancer-free society.
"We are honored to have CANSA as the official charity of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in 2024,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “CANSA fulfils a crucial role in our society, providing vital support and resources to those affected by cancer. We are proud to be able to show our support, while giving entrants the opportunity to do the same. The representatives from CANSA recently had their first taste of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series at the first event of the season in Gqeberha. We trust that it was a memorable one and that they are looking forward to the second event which will take place in the Mother City.”
"Although part of a series, each of the five events is unique in its own right, and we can’t wait for the CANSA Representatives to experience this," continues Meyer. "Your presence in Gqeberha was inspiring, and we are thrilled to continue the excitement by introducing you to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. To every entrant, you too can make a difference by supporting CANSA during the online entry process. No donation is too small. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer."
“CANSA supports communities across South Africa, and we were privileged to be part of the Gqeberha event, with the opportunity to raise awareness and share our service offerings with the assistance of our CANSA Gqeberha staff and volunteers,” says Leillani Geduld, CANSA National Corporate Relations & Sporting Events Manager. “The energy and vibe were terrific and CANSA received a very warm welcome from all event sponsors, partners, and participants. We’re charged and ready to bring the CANSA Active ‘Feel Good Fun’ vibe to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 12 May. Our CANSA Active Champions are preparing for the 10km run and actively promoting the event and creating awareness around CANSA’s services to the public.”

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km - Chepkorir's triumph in Gqeberha sets stage for her C.T. debut
Tuesday 09 April 2024
Chepkorir's triumph in Gqeberha sets stage for her Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K debut
Fresh from her dominant victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K this past weekend, Kenya’s Diana Chepkorir has confirmed that she will take part in the next Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race of the season, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 12 May 2024.
The diminutive Kenyan put in a big performance as she tackled the Nelson Mandela Bay wind head-on to record a memorable gun to tape victory on Sunday 7 April.
“I’m so happy because the course was so hard and the weather was too cold,” Chepkorir told reporters after crossing the finish line on Beach Road in an impressive time of 31:15. “I’m happy with the time because today it was not possible to run 30 minutes or faster because of the weather,” explained the athlete who is the holder of a 29:56 personal best 10km and is one of only seventeen women to have broken the 30 minute barrier.
Her first race on South African soil has left her yearning for more. Speaking moments after her world class run, the 22-year-old said she is looking forward to returning to South Africa. “I enjoyed it. It was good. I will come again.”
While Chepkorir will be returning to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in pursuit of a fast time, South Africa’s Elroy Gelant will use the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K as part of his Olympic preparation. The 37-year-old produced one of the best 10km performances of his 20-year career when he took second place in 28:17 - the second fastest 10km clocking of his life.
The Boxer Athletics Club man who just missed out on automatic Olympic qualification when he ran a lifetime best of 2:08:56 at the Zurich Marathon in Sevilla, Spain in February, says he will be using the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series to ensure that he makes a third consecutive Olympic appearance.
“I’m in much better shape,” said Gelant. “The next priority now is to qualify for the Olympic Games. Being an Olympic year and because I’ve been to the Olympics twice before it’s almost an automatic switch to get my mindset right. You still need to push yourself to maybe a 27:10 to be competitive at the Olympics. But I'll give it another chance at the South African Marathon Championship late in April in Durban. I want to secure my spot.”
"After their impressive performances in Gqeberha, we're thrilled to welcome Diana Chepkorir and Elroy Gelant to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "Their presence promises to elevate the level of competition in the Mother City, and we can't wait to see them compete again."
