Khatala excited to return for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Just two weeks after achieving the second-fastest marathon time of her career, Neheng Khatala is gearing up for her first Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series race in 2024, the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, that will take place this Sunday, 12 May in the Mother City.
Lesotho’s national record holder in the marathon, Khatala achieved a remarkable 2:28:37 at the Hamburg Marathon in late April, securing tenth place. She has since been recovering well and is excited to line up at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
“The second half of the race (refering to the Hamburg Marathon) was tough with a few small hills all the way to the finish. So that’s where I struggled. But I was well looked after and made it to the finish. For recovery, I’ve just been jogging and seeing the physio - the usual stuff, nothing much,” explained Khatala.
Despite struggling in the second half of the race in Germany, the Olympian still managed to cross the finish line just 31 seconds outside her national record. This grit coupled with her experience in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, makes Khatala a dangerous competitor. In 2022 she ran a personal best 32:06 in ‘The Mother City’, while last year she finished in third place.
This time around though, the Potchefstroom-based University of the North-West student doesn’t have a target time in mind saying only that she will see how she feels on the day.
“For Cape Town, I’ll just see how the body feels on the day and then I’ll take it from there. I don’t have a pre-determined objective to run a certain time. I will just run according to how the body responds,” confirms Khatala.
The Hollywood Athletics Club athlete is part of a strong women’s field which includes Diana Chepkorir. The 22-year-old Kenyan won the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on 7 April and is one of only seventeen women worldwide to have broken 30 minutes for 10km.
"We're thrilled to have Neheng Khatala return to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in 2024," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "With Neheng and Diana Chepkorir both confirming their entries, we're seeing an exceptional level of talent that’s elevating the standard of women's racing in the series. Their participation not only adds to the competitive edge but also underscores the international appeal of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. We’re expecting an exciting race in the women's field and look forward to witnessing their outstanding performances."

Rhodes Run |

FEW DAYS LEFT TO ENTER THE ICONIC RHODES RUN ON 29 JUNE 2024
The countdown to the closing date for entries in the 34th Rhodes Run happening on Saturday, 29 June 2024, has started. With Friday, 17 May 2024, rapidly approaching, the organisers of the Rhodes Run are encouraging all interested trail runners to complete the and submit the entry form available online for this year’s event.
The Rhodes Run, open to all trail runners, follows a challenging route along roads and paths high above the historic village of Rhodes situated in the southern Drakensburg mountains of the Eastern Cape. For more than thirty years, entry to the Rhodes Run was strictly by invitation only but the new organisers have widened the 2024 event to any interested parties.
Heather Ralph, the organiser of the Rhodes Run explains; “Taking over the reins of this unique event in 2023 has afforded us the opportunity to reassess the views expressed by various parties and introduce a new approach. Following careful consideration, we decided to open the Rhodes Run 2024 to all trail running enthusiasts who want to explore the exceptional beauty of the majestic Drakensberg mountains.”
The 52km route starts and ends in the village of Rhodes. Commencing at an altitude of 1800m, the route reaches its highest point at 2680m and has an average “on top” of 2560m. The cumulative climb is approximately 1600m. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, the trail run ascends on gravel roads then meanders along stock paths and trails through farms along the Lesotho border to just below Ben MacDhui (the second highest peak in the Eastern Cape at 3001m), before descending along the road that accessed the now closed ski resort, Tiffendell.
With the field capped at a maximum of 300 runners, participants can appreciate the breath taking beauty of the unspoilt mountain vistas accentuated by the crisp winter air and the stillness of the open landscapes. The extreme conditions including snow, rain, high altitudes and icy river crossings appeal to the sense of adventure inherent in all trail runners. Heavy snow falls are a factor that must be taken seriously – the first event staged in July 1989 was almost a no-starter due to heavy snow falls the night before. High altitude training and warm gear are essential with the sub-zero start and temperatures rising fractionally as runners make their way to the top of the escarpment.
Whilst the runners battle the elements that will add definitely add spice to the war stories around the fire later in the day, family and friends can enjoy the warm hospitality of the local community who embrace the spirit of the Rhodes Run. Flowing from a discussion in the local watering hotel between local property owners back in 1986, the intention of the event was to put Rhodes back on the map before it followed the same fate as other small platteland villages which faded into obscurity.
In an effort to keep the vision and tradition of the event alive, the organisers, Heather and Rudi, are committed to involving the local community in all aspects of the Rhodes Run from hosting, accommodation, preparing hearty meals, arranging plenty of activities to crafting the components of the goodie bags.
Heather explains, “The Rhodes Run attracts a host of visitors to our area who may never have heard of the tiny village or be familiar with the attractions of the area such as hiking, alpine flowers, fly fishing, mountain biking or exploring the legendary passes that wind through the different districts of the Eastern Cape highlands. We hope that people will fall in love with the landscapes and people of this very special corner of the southern Drakensberg and come back to visit.”
“As the running calendar keeps expanding, we want to attract those families who love adventure especially when it involves a road trip to less explored areas of our incredibly diverse country. We look forward to extending you a warm welcome in Rhodes.”
More information is available on www.rhodesrun.co.za and race organiser, Heather Ralph, can be contacted on heather@rhodesrun.co.za
Ends Issued 26 April 2024
NOTES TO THE EDITOR
The Rhodes Run is not registered with ASA. It is therefore not a recognised, timed event, and does not qualify as an ultramarathon.

Wally Hayward Marathon as a Comrades Qualifier
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed that some athletes who ran yesterday’s Wally Hayward Marathon in Gauteng as a qualifier for the 2024 Comrades Marathon will have their finishing times recalculated.
This comes in the wake of nearly 1850 athletes (including both 42km and 21km athletes) being affected by a misdirection in the route which occurred between the 2km and 3km mark due to the lead vehicle making a wrong turn at an intersection.
Runners at the front of the race consequently ran approximately 3km longer than the official race distance while runners closer to the back were redirected along the correct route and ran the usual 42km race distance.
CMA Race & Operations Manager, Ann Ashworth says, “The race timing service provider has calculated and published an adjusted 42.2km time and, for 9 athletes who missed the sub 4h50 qualifying standard, an estimated 48km time which will allow them to qualify for this year’s race.”
“We look forward to having this issue resolved by Monday, 6 May 2024, which is the final day for submission of all qualifying details for the 2024 Comrades Marathon.”

ABSA Run Your City Cape Town 10 km - Langat ready for round two,
Tuesday 30 April 2024
Langat ready for round two, as Mulaudzi gears up for Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K
Fresh from his triumph in 'The Friendly City' at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month, Kenya’s Vincent Langat is set to make a return to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series on Sunday, 12 May 2024. This time, he has his sights set on the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K.
“I have been well. I just went on with training without any problems,” said Langat who produced his fastest 10km clocking in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in what was his first official race outside Kenya.
But Langat has since improved on the mark he set on 7 April in Gqeberha. This past weekend, the man who claimed a top ten finish in the 10km at the 2024 Kenyan Cross Country trials, took fifth place at the Adizero Road to Records in Germany in a lightening quick 27:11.
Armed with this new lifetime best, Langat is high on confidence and optimistic about breaking the 28-minute barrier once again when he lines up in ‘The Mother City’ on Mother’s Day.
“It was very nice to cross the finish line as the first finisher (refering to his performance at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K). I hoped for a faster time, but the circumstances didn’t allow it. I want to win another race in South Africa! And try to better my PB,” confirms Langat.
When he won in the Eastern Cape, Langat saw off a strong challenge from Precious Mashele who eventually faded into third place as he was passed by a fast-finishing Elroy Gelant. In Cape Town, the East African will face a new opponent in Kabelo Mulaudzi. Although injury forced Mulaudzi out of the first race of the 2024 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, he has recovered and is looking forward to the challenge.
“I’ve recovered from the injury and have been training well,” said Mulaudzi. “I’m just focusing on my race because I know it’s not going to be an easy one. I’m racing against the best in the country, the likes of Precious Mashele, Stephen Mokoka and Elroy Gelant. But for now, I’m focusing on my race. If I can get a top five or top three podium position, I would be happy. I’m looking forward to giving my best.”
"We're thrilled to welcome Vincent Langat back to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in May," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. "His return adds an extra level of excitement, highlighting the competitive spirit of the Series. It's fantastic to see South Africa's elite athletes like Kabelo Mulaudzi and Precious Mashele going head-to-head with international athletes of Langat's caliber. We can’t wait to witness this thrilling competition at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, May 12."

As the most consistent performer in the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, Precious Mashele is eagerly anticipating his second event of the 2024 series: the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 12 May 2024.
Fresh from his bronze medal win in the 5000m event at the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships on Saturday (20 April), Mashele has confirmed his readiness to tackle the iconic 10km race in the Mother City.
“I’m happy with my bronze medal at the Championships because the race was very tough. I’m very happy with what I got,” he said of his 13:35.19 finish behind winner Adriaan Wildschutt and silver medalist Elroy Gelant at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
“My fitness is coming around. Although I’m not where I want to be yet, I can say I’m at about 70% of where I should be. But I’ve got momentum and I think it’s only a matter of time before I get the shape I want.”
Despite not being as fit as he’d like to be yet, the PUMA ambassador still managed to claim a top eight finish (13:46.19) in a hot and humid 5000m final at the African Games in Ghana in March and then followed that up with a dogged third place (28:19) during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month.
Running in the colours of Boxer Athletics Club, Mashele represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics and is confident that he can translate that track fitness into good results in a road running series where he has claimed four podium finishes in his last five starts. Mashele believes he tends to perform well during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series because the organisers invite world class athletes who make it easier for him to run faster. It is for this reason that he is excited to be part of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 12 May.
“When I run with the East Africans I run fast times and I run away from the South Africans. So for me, it’s a good opportunity to run with the East Africans,” adds Mashele.
"We're thrilled to have Precious Mashele line up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 12 May,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder. “His performance at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K earlier this month and at the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships this past weekend showcased his incredible talent, and we're excited to see him bring that energy to the streets of the Mother City. Mashele's presence adds to the elite field and further elevates the competitive spirit of the event. We wish him the best of luck as he takes on this iconic race."
