To say this race is difficult is an understatement - the halfway mark is 1,746 metres (5,730 feet) above the start/finish point. The first 10 kilometres are run along a single mountain path. Besides the climb, the path is uneven and rough. The next nine kilometres are run on hardened gravel; the road is steep, and the going tough. The following six kilometres of mountain track end at a rock face and a daunting set of chain ladders. Courage! Steel yourself for the climb. Up here the mountain air is fresh, the views sweeping. You are running on top of the world! The route loops around the summit of the Amphitheatre and tumbles down the Sentinel Gully. The run back down is along the same path and is tricky in places.
